Richard Russell’s Paintings on Display at AuburnArt.com

by AuburnArt, under Blogroll, News & Events, Press Releases

Whether an alumni of Auburn University or a dedicated fan, many can appreciate the work of artist Richard Russell. With the stroke of a brush or the touch of a finger, palm or knuckle, Russell uses his unique style to capture landmarks, mascots and traditions in his extensive Auburn Collection.

Russell brings his work to life by using a combination of watercolor and acrylic paints. Rather than using a primed canvas, Russell applies the bright watercolors and textured acrylics to a special watercolor canvas that is thinner than most canvases and has the ability of absorbing water based mediums to hold vibrant colors.

After visiting Auburn’s campus, Russell fell in love with it. He recently re-created the most recognized building on the Plains, Samford Hall, in 2008. Russell’s Auburn collection also includes, To Dream of Orange and Blue, which brings a child’s dream of football and Auburn tradition alive, while his piece, This One We May Drop, highlights our eagle dangling the Big Al mascot over Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Choose from framed and unframed prints as well as canvas reproductions of each piece at AuburnArt.com with prices ranging from $19.95-199.95.

AuburnArt.com To Host Former Auburn Football Star Quentin Groves

Meet “Q” A-Day from 10-11:30am

Auburn, Ala.- Meet Auburn Alumni and former number 54 Quentin Groves, A-Day, Saturday April 18 from 10 - 11:30 am at AuburnArt.com. Groves, who tied Auburn’s 22-year-old record of 26 quarterback sacks his senior season, will be signing select prints and photos available at AuburnArt.com.

Groves, a 2007 second-round draft choice for the Jacksonville Jaguars, completed an impressive career at Auburn as one of only four players in Auburn history to record 20 or more career sacks. Groves also tied Auburn’s single-game record with four sacks against Kentucky in 2004. “Coach Gene Chizik was the defensive coordinator during Groves’ impressive first season at Auburn, and AuburnArt.com wanted to bring a player who is familiar with Coach Chizik’s aggressive coaching style and who is beloved by Auburn fans young and old,” said Frank Brown, co-owner of AuburnArt.com.

Recently Groves decided to change his Jacksonville Jaguar jersey number of 93 to 54, his number at Auburn. “I’m kind of superstitious,” said Groves, according to a jaguars.com interview. “I wanted to be respected in the NFL as a guy who can play the run and rush the passer.”

AuburnArt.com has planned many activities for the 2009 A-Day celebration. Aside from meeting number 54, Auburn fans can get a sneak preview of AuburnArt.com’s new items for the 2009 season.

The owners of AuburnArt.com invite Auburn fans to visit downtown and introduce their families and friends to the traditions and history of Auburn in the informal gallery setting AuburnArt.com has to offer. “You can take a stroll around the store pointing out campus landmarks, Aubie, and the flight of the eagle all in one setting and pass this tradition on to your children, while growing the Auburn family. It has become an A-Day and AuburnArt.com tradition for parents to introduce their children to their first Auburn Tigers football gameday experience,” said AuburnArt.com co-owner, Ingrid Brown.

Shop In Store or online. AuburnArt.com is located at 102 North College Street, downtown next to Toomer’s Drugs. Auburn Alum- James Dean

Who is James Dean?

The last quarter before graduating as an electrical engineer James Dean took a basic drawing class. "My instructor told me I should be studying art, not engineering. My grades in engineering sort of agreed with his opinion. However, I had always been told that it would be almost impossible for me to make a living as an artist, so I was afraid to try art as a career."  While still working as an engineer, he began to create paintings of local scenes and found that people were actually willing to buy these pieces. Eventually, he decided to work as an artist on a full time basis. He says now, "I believe that my art is my best natural talent. I need to do art. I really don’t have a choice."

Who is PetetheCat?

Black Cats were bad luck or so James thought. Pete had the best personality of all the cats in the shelter that day and who could resist his persistent personality, sticking his paw out of the bars and asking for someone to come play. In the end Pete, came to live with James and has taken over his artwork. Pete only lived with James for 9 short months, but the resulting influence can be seen in all his pieces. James made his first painting of Pete, a sort of moody, thoughtful piece with mostly white space and a little long tailed cat in the corner. He painted him a deep blue partly because it is one of his favorite colors and partly because he didn’t know if people would want a painting of a black cat.  Pete has made a lasting impression and can be seen in galleries across the country along with other of Dean’s piece. Meet James Dean, his pal Pete and the new editions to his Auburn collection, Iron Bowl Weekend at the AuburnArt.com Gallery.
