Auburn Alum- James Dean

Who is James Dean?

The last quarter before graduating as an electrical engineer James Dean took a basic drawing class. "My instructor told me I should be studying art, not engineering. My grades in engineering sort of agreed with his opinion. However, I had always been told that it would be almost impossible for me to make a living as an artist, so I was afraid to try art as a career."  While still working as an engineer, he began to create paintings of local scenes and found that people were actually willing to buy these pieces. Eventually, he decided to work as an artist on a full time basis. He says now, "I believe that my art is my best natural talent. I need to do art. I really don’t have a choice."

Who is PetetheCat?

Black Cats were bad luck or so James thought. Pete had the best personality of all the cats in the shelter that day and who could resist his persistent personality, sticking his paw out of the bars and asking for someone to come play. In the end Pete, came to live with James and has taken over his artwork. Pete only lived with James for 9 short months, but the resulting influence can be seen in all his pieces. James made his first painting of Pete, a sort of moody, thoughtful piece with mostly white space and a little long tailed cat in the corner. He painted him a deep blue partly because it is one of his favorite colors and partly because he didn’t know if people would want a painting of a black cat.  Pete has made a lasting impression and can be seen in galleries across the country along with other of Dean’s piece. Meet James Dean, his pal Pete and the new editions to his Auburn collection, Iron Bowl Weekend at the AuburnArt.com Gallery.
